Nation Branding: building the image of a nation

As everybody involved in the nation branding field is well aware of, nation brands, or the image of a nation, rather than built is prompted (you don’t build it, as it exists in the minds of people only, but you prompt that mental image to change through strategically-aligned actions) but don’t get misleaded by this presentations’s inaccurate title. It is a great presentation worth reading. It’s a pity that it is available in Portuguese only (made by Gustavo Santos), but it’s so well-made that it had to be featured on Nation-Branding.info (by the way if you can read Spanish or French you’ll probably understand most of it).

Does anyone have ideas how one can study nation-branding from sociological point of view? I’d like to make my thesis connected with this subject but I can’t use management strategy as I study on sociology department.

Hi Anastasia, haven’t thought about it in depth, but as nation branding has something to do with image and prejudice (germans are good at engineering, but bad at parties, brazilians are great in partying but bad in organizing and so on), maybe you could link that to an approach from a sociological point of view? In fact, the image of nations has lots of touchpoints with sociology and social psychology, I believe…
